Greetings!
This is a Japanese "Nishi Doll" maybe over 60 years old and a wonderful Christmas gift or general gift or addition to any doll collection. I learned US soldiers often purchased and brought Nishi Dolls home as gifts after World War II. I learned that this doll was either from the famous Japanese musicals, "Madame Butterfly", or from "Lady Chrysanthemum". Inside the hollow black wood pedestal is a music box. This beautiful doll rotates and the music is very beautiful. You can turn the music on or off with a brass knob on the pedestal. It winds up by rotating the doll. When I had it on my chest of drawers the music amplified even greater on top of the cabinet. It is some song perhaps from either of the plays "Madame Butterfly" or "Lady Chrysanthemum". I personally think this doll is from the play "Lady Chrysanthemum" because there was a large flower that since I photographed I lost. If I ever find it after I move from my home, in my belongings, I will mail it to whomever the winning bidder is. I am including a picture of it as maybe it was the "Chrysanthemum" of the play... but also her arms are positioned like she held something that is gone too, so I am not certain. I learned the doll could have held a gun as in the play "Madame Butterfly" I guess it is a tragic musical where a gun is involved in the story. All this is guess work by me so please... I am not claiming anything, just trying to be informative about this beautiful piece of Japanese and world history and for this reason this is an "as is sale" in every respect. I took a picture of the doll from an angle that shows she leans on the pedestal and is loose. I'm leaving that too the next owner to correct. She does rotate fine and the music I played quite often as it is beautiful and reminds me of an exotic land, a faraway place and time in the intriguing part of the world of Japan. I packed it very carefully and with plenty of padding. Please see my ratings as I care about my customers.
